A Look into Biomass as a Renewable Energy

In light of climate change and worsening environmental conditions, the world has finally realised that it is time to move towards cleaner and greener industrial processes. It could be the use of energy that is eco-friendly and sustainable.

Now one good alternative to conventional energy sources would be biomass. It is derived from plants or animals. It is one renewable source of energy because people can grow plants. One of its largest sources would be wood, including yard clippings, and forest residues to name a few.

Biomass can be used directly, or indirectly by converting it into another energy product like biofuel, Wikipedia notes. The conversion uses chemicals, heat and other processes to break down the sugars, starches, and molecules found in plants, The National Geographic relates. Some of the more popular types of biofuels are bioethanol and biodiesel.

In bioethanol, sugar cane is fermented to produce alcohol that is used for generating power. It can also be crushed and burned to produce steam for turbines. Indeed, the U.S. uses gasoline with a mix of bioethanol. Biodiesel, on the other hand, is derived from vegetable oils and animal fats. It serves as a diesel additive that helps reduce levels of carbon monoxide, particulates, and hydrocarbons found in diesel-powered cars.

The re-emerging popularity of biofuels may be attributed to surging oil prices and growing concern about carbon emissions. The International Energy Agency has recognised the important role of biofuels if the world is to take actions to reduce carbon emissions and reduce its reliance on crude oil. As of this time, biofuels only make up about 3% of the total fuel consumed by road transportations globally, according to the IEA.
